Last of the Watermelon

This season hasn’t been that great for me.  I lost focus of my garden as I delved deeper into my candles.  Plus, bugs on the tomatoes, the cukes had a small production window, and my peppers (tabasco not included) have been nothing.  Not much encouragement………..but my watermelon patch was the most successful I’ve had.

The biggest watermelon weighed in at 15 lbs, but it was picked too early.  Same story with a few smaller melons, and one melon, I let it ripen to the point of rotting.  Judging the correct time to pick the watermelon has been tricky for me.

This weeked I did some work in the garden, mainly clearing it out, and I pulled up the wrong watermelon plant.  And today, it’s dead.  Completely.  Dried up and brown, so I picked its melon, which happens to be the last one growing.

I brought it inside and took pictures, and when I cut it open, I exclaimed words.  The smell was very watermelon-y, and the taste was very watermelon-y.

The last watermelon was the best.

Happy gardening 🙂

So Much Basil….

Well, it’s August and I’m in prime harvesting season for basil apparently….I have so much basil that I’m at a loss of what to do with it.  My lone basil plant from last year was extremely successful when it came to propagation.  I put a dent in the bed, though…

So far I’ve dried some basil and poured apple cider vinegar over some to make basil vinegar.  I don’t know…we’ll see what happens with that…Pesto, though, is very much in my future.
